Emily Joy Sullivan · Sullivan, Bootstrapping

Program Note

Bootstrapping is a commentary on the popular bootstrapping myth we embrace in the United States. We are rewarded for doing all we can to climb to the top, but how is it that we "lift ourselves up?" What do we do to ourselves and others in the process? Are we plucky and determined.... or just plain ruthless? The oboe is full of energy and conviction, relentless in its drive to ascend to the heights of its range and speed. It eventually reaches its goal, losing control and trampling its own notes in the process.

— Emily Joy Sullivan
