Program Note
Written over the course of 2017, 2018, and 2019 by Jamie Leigh Sampson, Sample Rate is a song cycle, which explores the familiar act of growing up in an unfair, but wonderful, world. The listener is taken through an aural world both as familiar and unfamiliar as the stories one hears when sitting up late talking with a best friend. Each movement of Sample Rate features a snapshot of the narrator's life, starting with her entrance into teenhood and independence at 14, and ending with the closing years of her life and her reflection of it all held at 94. The story is told through the lens of only the narrator's half of her conversations and interactions, and allows the music to fill in the other half. Through the use of varied techniques in composition, Sample Rate allows for the listener to relate and grow close to a character whose name they will never know.
