Program Note
I wrote Berlin Counterpoint during the summer of 2009, and it was premiered in the city’s famed Neue Synagoge. I lived in Berlin that summer as a student of Samuel Adler’s at the Freie Universität. I loved living there and I did my best to explore as much of its unique architecture, food, and culture as I could.
This piece honors Berlin and my experience of its beautiful, sprawling geography, which I accessed through its web of public transportation. Berlin Counterpoint’s weaving melodic lines converge, collide, and stride with independent purpose, like the city’s teeming population as they move through a long summer day from sunrise to sunset.
