Program Note

Perimeters was completed in January of 2017 and written for Dr. Susan Royal and the Fredonia Flute Ensemble. The opening material is divided between two distinct groups, each focusing on a different type of musical sound. The first is a raucous jumble of soloistic gestures articulated by a quartet of flutes at the stage perimeter. In contrast, a lyrical sequence of solos, duos, and trios emanate from a central ensemble comprised of flute, alto flute, and bass flute. Eventually, these ideas give rise to a series of canons—performed by the perimeter quartet at various time and musical intervals—while the internal trio interjects, accompanies, and punctuates the quadraphonic elements distributed around the stage.
