Composer Donald Bohlen, while having lived most of his adult life in the United States, was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. Establishing himself early as a pianist, Bohlen was subsequently awarded the inaugural Coronation Music Prize, enabling him to be presented as both solo recitalist and concerto performer in Canada.
His education in the United States—studying composition, musicology, and piano—included the completion of degree programs from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, and Princeton University, where he studied under the tutelage of Roger Sessions and Milton Babbitt. He was subsequently awarded the Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Ross Lee Finney and Leslie Bassett. While at Michigan, he was recognized as being in the forefront of pianists involved in the premiere presentations of new music for solo piano. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Composition at the State University of New York at Fredonia. Actively productive as a composer, Donald Bohlen has written for a wide variety of musical media, including chamber music, choral and solo vocal works, solo piano, opera, and music for film. |
