Program Note

The music for Hymn was set to the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe and completed during the fall of 2014. The composition is dedicated to the memory of Carla Anne Ciancio Smith (1962–2013), loving mother, devoted wife, and cherished daughter. A committed teacher and mentor, Carla sought to enrich the lives of everyone crossing her path, as she explored the depths of human growth and potential. For those who knew her, she is a constant reminder of warmth, love, and hope.

— Andrew Martin Smith
Hymn (1835)
by E. A. Poe

At morn — at noon — at twilight dim --
Maria! thou hast heard my hymn!
In joy and woe — in good and ill --
Mother of God, be with me still!
When the hours flew brightly by,
And not a cloud obscured the sky,
My soul, lest it should truant be,
Thy grace did guide to thine and thee;
Now, when storms of Fate o’ercast
Darkly my Present and my Past,
Let my Future radiant shine
With sweet hopes of thee and thine!
