Program Note
This eight-minute work for percussion sextet was commissioned by John Kilkenny and the George Mason University Percussion Ensemble. The composition draws inspiration from two seemingly disparate sources, Ritual Music by David Skidmore and the progressive heavy metal band Between the Buried and Me. While no musical material is directly quoted or borrowed, the convergence of these influences significantly shaped the work’s sonic character and overall direction. Elements of ritual, repetition, and visceral intensity coexist throughout the piece, informing both its musical language and its title, and resulting in a work that pairs a metal-core feel with primal, percussive sounds. — Andrew Cote
