Program Note
Open Roads grew out of a story from the Aruna Quartet, a 30-hour road trip that began as a solution to flight cancellations but soon became a journey filled with energy, camaraderie, and the shared joy of making music together. I wanted to capture that same sense of forward momentum in a piece that could serve as an opener, something that bursts out of the gate and invites the audience along for the ride. At the same time, I was writing during the early months of the COVID shutdown, when touring had suddenly stopped and highways that were once busy were now strangely quiet. That contrast between the memory of the open road filled with life and the realityof stillness and emptiness became central to the character of the work.
The title also carries a more personal layer. While composing, I often found myself thinking of David Maslanka, a composer whose music and spirit have had a lasting impact on me. His piece Mountain Roads echoed in my thoughts throughout the process, and including the word “roads” in my own title felt like a small way of honoring both his influence and the meaningful connections that continue to be made by Aruna as they continue on the road as a Quartet. — Andrew Cote
