Program Note
Ulterior Motives was composed in the summer of 2012 during my final weeks living in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan—a period marked by transition and reflection. At the time, I was staying with Jennifer Blackwell, one of the founding members of the Blackwater Saxophone Duo.
During this time, I jokingly referred to myself as the duo’s “composer in residence,” a title that carried more than one meaning. The name Ulterior Motives reflects this layered context, alluding both to the musical motives that drive the piece and to the quiet personal motivations behind its creation. — Andrew Cote
