Program Note

I wonder at the idleness of tears for Flute Quartet was commissioned and premiered by the Divertimento Flute Quartet. The title refers to a sonnet by Lizette Woodworth Reese (1856-1935) called “Tears.” The work sonically depicts lines from Reese’s poem and uses the four C flutes in a way that emphasizes resonance and echo to evoke the melancholy and sentimental tone in her writing.
