Program Note

I am a speed reader. Sometimes to my own detriment or joy. When I am reading at my fastest, I sometimes skip a line and need to backtrack for clarity. Other times it produces the most ridiculous clauses. I read the phrase They Were Verbs when I was flying through the introduction of a cookbook and it brought be up short in its silliness. I remember laughing out loud and then thinking that it felt fitting for a title. I pictured a bunch of kids running and jumping, spinning around in circles and screaming with glee. The action of each member of that little cluster of active children became a section of the work. I can think of no better ensemble for the joys children’s verbs than a swirling, whirling woodwind quintet. They Were Verbs was commissioned and premiered by the Hillsdale Wind Quintet.
