Program Note
For the Birds for Saxophone Quartet was commissioned by the h2 Saxophone Quartet. Adapted from part of an earlier work of mine for two violins and mezzo soprano, it draws inspiration from the original text, poetry by Penelope Cray, which includes pastoral imagery of bumblebees, flowers, and myna birds. It uses one of Messiaen's Modes of Limited Transposition as its pitch material. This nod to Messiaen, known for his work with birdsong, also incorporates several bird and bumblebee sounds in the form of traditional trills, bisbigliando timbre trills, tremolos, and slap tongue. The frenetic energy of the work is meant to imitate both bird flight and the buzz of bumblebees.
