Program Note
writhe, unfurl was commissioned by PANdemonium4, a flute quartet located in central Ohio. The piece was inspired by the complex and dynamic movements of octopuses. Two-thirds of an octopus’s neurons are located outside of its brain and its arms can move and make decisions without neurological input from its brain. This concept along with the multiple levels and layers of movement that an octopus can exhibit simultaneously inspired much of gestural writing in the piece. The visual element of the piece was conceived by interartist, Mare Hirsch with similar inspirations.
