Program Note
Unequal Measure is a fanfare for a villain. One that—like many other villains—was created when an ordinary person buckled under the weight of unequal standards. They were too much of everything bad and not enough of everything good and there is no ground in between. This villain is capable of joy, elation, exhaustion, dancing alone to their favorite song, and getting their job done all while under the constant surveillance of social media, meddling relatives, and unrealistic expectations from internal and external voices.
This quintet battles back and forth between a rhythmic fanfare and a tangled dance. The harmonic motion is constantly struggling between unisons and dense sets creating a stark contrast of icy octaves and the driving density.
Unequal Measure was co-commissioned in 2018 by the Fifth Circle Reed Quintet and Paradise Winds.
