Program Note
Mother’s Broken Pantoum is a collaboration between Jamie Leigh Sampson and poet Pamela Hart. At a dinner following their first collaboration, American Mother—written for and premiered by Mariami Bekauri and Sandra Leary in the week leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic shut down—Pamela and Jamie realized that their artistic vision overlapped in ways that they wanted to take to an operatic stage. Mother’s Broken Pantoum is a first step towards that vision, tentatively titled …In a Flash.

Text:
Night cracks sleep into ruined dreams
Phone ringing I am fumbling
This is Dr Somebody
I used to have a blessed life
Phone rings my mind still fumbles
I picture her always running
Dr Somebody breaks the news
She’s gone and I am broken
I picture her running heart
Bullets skipping through its chambers
She’s gone
No finish line for my tears
Bullets tore my dreams into after and before
Someone broke my daughter’s future
There’s no line to cross together
Night cracks my sleep, this ruined life
