Program Note
In Black, White, COLOUR!, I sought to capture the juxtaposition of light and dark found in the Yulia Brodskaya artwork that inspired It. Most crucially, I wanted to convey unbridled joy and a sense of celebration; a youthful playfulness infects the initial sections of the piece (and the choreography that Maggie Austin created along with it as part of a collaboration at SUNY Fredonia this past spring). In turn, the central section evokes the grim reaper character entering and taking charge, calling us beyond play to the reality of our own mortality. Yet in fact, this spectre of death has been lurking there on the sidelines all along, haunting us while also making life so precious, so meaningful. Ultimately, the delicate darkness of the “B” section bleeds back into the revelry, rendering it more poignant. A joyful, embodied spirit careens to the end of life, sucking all she can out of it before going out with a bang.
