Program Note
Fanfare and Farewell was written for Craig McKenzie and the Clyde High School Band. I completed my student teaching with Craig at Clyde city schools. I got to know the band so well during my time there that I decided to write a piece that would both highlight their strengths and challenge the areas on which I had worked with them as an educator. The piece features an ever-churning repetitive texture on top of which are broad melodies, rhythmic complexities, and exciting climaxes. The piece was my way of celebrating the band, thanking Craig for his guidance, and saying goodbye.
Fanfare and Farewell was premiered by the Clyde High School Band under the direction of Craig McKenzie on February 29, 2008 in the Clyde High School Auditorium in Clyde, OH.
