Program Note
residue was commissioned by the Aruna Saxophone Quartet as part of their partnership with ADJ •ective New Music, LLC. The work combines and develops musical material from two of my recent works for saxophone, struggling in excess (2017) for soprano saxophone and fixed media as well as Flora (2020) for alto and tenor saxophones (particularly the fourth movement titled, Posidonia oceanica: Neptune Grass. Each previous work conceptually explores human waste, pollution, global warming, and the climate crisis. residue reimagines, juxtaposes, and expands on the primary musical and textural materials from each of these previous works.
As humans, we leave nothing untouched. Our residue, what is left behind us in our wake, covers this earth and its inhabitants. The questions left unanswered: is our damage permanent? Do we have the will to change?
