Program Note
The Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy for Music asked me to write this piece as part of their 2020 #GLFCAMGigThruCOVID campaign to create performance opportunities for musicians struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I wrote this piece for percussionist Joel M. Ross, who premiered it on October 1, 2020 over video. Joel and I worked closely through the composition of this piece and I am very grateful for the collaboration we enjoyed.
Talia/Talea is dedicated to my niece, Talia, who was born on March 23, 2020, and its persistent rhythmic pattern references the date of her birth by featuring two- and three-beat groupings. The repeating melody that runs throughout the piece also references her birthday by featuring only leaps of two or three half steps.
