Program Note
Gestures celebrates the solo flute through the interplay of rhythmic fluidity and melodic contour. The piece is written without bar lines, and uses beaming to show melodic fragments of varying lengths that push against and pull away from one another.
Gestures aims to convey create a musical world that is both capricious and controlled – an impulsive series of melodic ideas that are distinct, wild, and energetic, but does not give in to chaos.
