Program Note
A Chasing After the Wind was commissioned by Kyle Cherwinski in the fall of 2012. During this time, Kyle was beginning a masters program at the University of Northern Colorado and I was just starting my doctoral coursework at George Mason University. A common theme that comes with moving to a new area is the stress of building new relationships while trying to maintain old ones. The people close to us go through major changes; some get married, some breakup. New lives are born and other lives are taken away. All the while you wish you could celebrate or support the people who matter most to you.
The title comes from the book of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament. The book provides teachings specifically about dealing with worldly problems and asserts that everything we may desire in the world is “a chasing after the wind". It also provides us with a reminder that people understand when we are not able to be physically present for all of the “big” moments and that, in the end, our relationships with each other and with God are what really matters.
